HOW TO ORDER - FOR SOMEONE ELSE

START WITH A GOOD CONVERSATION & HAVE A COPY OF THEIR LATEST OPTICAL PRESCRIPTION HANDY

You need to establish the needs of the end user and make sure that the protective spectacles that you choose comply with your Company health and safety policy....

Ensure you have a copy of a recent eye examination prescription (preferably the one used to make up their current everyday glasses and that is less than 2 years old) unless they are having problems with their vision or are likely to be changing their everyday spectacles soon in which case they should certainly be re-examined before purchasing new safety glasses. Having safety spectacles different than their 'everyday' glasses can cause adaptation issues each time they are swapped and minimising this is advised by keeping both sets of spectacles as similar as possible, particularly as the safety glasses will be work in hazardous working conditions.

You can't make decisions/assumptions on their behalf, so work together through the following topics.....

ESTABLISH THE FRAME CHOICE WITH THEM

This is pretty much down to the individual, unless your Company is restricting them to a specific range or brand. CHOOSE SAFETY FRAMES in the top menu will help narrow your choices down. When you click  DETAILS/BUY  underneath the frame suggestions you will be able to see the frame in more detail - click select colour and size to see what is available.
Clicking Frame Size help will help you choose the correct size. If in doubt you can always use our sample frame service by clicking SAMPLES in the top menu to 'try before you buy'.

ESTABLISH THE VISION TYPE THAT THEY WILL NEED

This very much boils down to the age of the wearer - Below age 47 is fairly simple.... this person usually only wears single focus lenses, putting them on for DISTANCE, NEAR or wears them for EVERYTHING.

Over 47 becomes more complicated when a person starts to need a different lens power for distance than for seeing near.... These people have two lens powers written on their prescription for distance and near or have a NEAR ADD value written on it.

You need to determine what type of lenses the person wears in their everyday glasses and decide if these are suitable for work. If they can wear their everyday glasses at work and they are perfectly suited to what they are doing, then just order their safety glasses with the same vision type to match. Ask them whether their glasses are just for Distance or just for near (Single Focus) or whether they have lenses that allow them to see everything through one pair of glasses. Find out if they have a lens that has different powers at the top and bottom of the lens (Bifocal - with a line on the lens or Varifocal without a line on the lens)

The over 47 year old person who just puts glasses on to read and has to take them off to walk around/see distance or puts them on to see distance but takes them off to read can have single focus lenses just like their everyday glasses unless your Health and Safety policy at work states that they must wear safety glasses at all times. In this instance to stay protected at all times a bifocal lens is recommended so the wearer doesn't have to take them off. We don't recommend varifocal safety glasses to people who haven't worn them before

If you really can't establish this between yourselves call us for help before specifying your order.

ESTABLISH THE LENS MATERIAL REQUIRED FOR THE TASK BEING UNDERTAKEN

Impact resistant safety glasses for use where there is likelihood of particle impact with the lens are most commonly made of shatterproof EN166F Polycarbonate - All of our safety frames can be specified with Polycarbonate ( for frames with inserts the visor is always made of Polycarbonate.

Where there is risk of contact with oils, solvents, lubricating or hydraulic fluid shatterproof EN166F TRIVEX might be a better descision - Polycarbonate can be damaged by such fluids but TRIVEX is inert to them. TRIVEX lens material is available soon in the UNIVET range.

People who dont need impact resistant lenses, say for example walking through a hazardous area but never near the source of flying particles can have non-shatterproof EN166S Standard plastic lens material, but if they ever pick a tool up to show them what to do they will have the wrong lens material infront of their eyes. If in doubt always put them in Polycarbonate.

OPTIONAL EXTRAS

Supplied at your discretion, but consider the environment the user may be working in - Photochromic lenses are useful for visual comfort inside and out. Anti reflection coatings are useful where the wearer uses VDUs or drives vehicles with their safety spectacles on. Anti-fog solution is useful for physical workers who get hot and sweaty, or workers who change from a cold to warm environment (i.e. coming inside from the cool outdoors). Fine moisture droplets condense on the lens causing a fog so the wearer has to take them off to wipe them unless treated.

ESTABLISH THEIR PD (Distance between pupils)

You can get the PD value in a number of ways…

· The person can ring their Optician and ask them (nicely) explaining that they need it for safety glasses for work. If they have bought spectacles from them already they will have this value and should be helpful once they know it is just for safety glasses.

· OR the person can measure it themself by CLICKING the instructions in MEASURE IT MYSELF in the PD section

· OR we can measure it for you/them. Just follow the instructions on providing an image - you can upload cit with your order or email it later

NOTE: For varifocal orders you don't need to worry about PD measurements at all. We will post out a sample frame, ruler & simple instructions to you after your order is placed so that you can provide an image of them wearing the frame. Email or upload this image to us and we will make all of the necessary calculations to centre the varifocal lens accurately. Just click I HAVE ORDERED VARIFOCALS in the PD section of the order page.
